I cannot believe that it has been over a month since our in-person program, BD Live Swap on March 11, 2020. Within two days of that program, events around the City of Boston were canceled, and a few days later, we were all making plans to work from home. By March 17th, we could only order takeout, and we all realized our heroes are not only nurses, police, and firefighters, but those stocking store shelves, delivering food, MBTA drivers, and teachers. Essential services were asked to stay open, but it turned out those services did not include the movies, hair salons/barbers, or golf courses (I’ve had one pandemic meltdown and can honestly say it wasn’t because I couldn’t get a pedicure). And worst of it is watching our fellow members and friends who have found themselves or loved ones sick or unemployed.
While it might seem that what we all know and love to do is threatened, we’ve also learned a LOT. We’ve got video conferencing nailed, as well as how to look good on a video conference (angles and lighting). It is probably the truth that we are all communicating more now than ever, and sometimes with people we haven’t talked to in years! We’ve also learned how to cut our significant other’s hair and sew masks (thank you, YouTube!).
All of this said, your SMPS Boston Chapter volunteers have been working hard and have postponed or reimagined all remaining March through June events. Our Communications Committee has been instrumental in making sure the word gets out about programming changes, in addition to coordinating member and sponsor blog posts, and sharing member news. We’ve held two Virtual Happy Hours, our annual Bootcamp has been reimagined as a virtual series, and this week is our Annual Town Hall for volunteers, which will be held via Zoom. For a complete listing of our programs, visit our website: www.smpsboston.org
As you might have guessed, the one event we have not been able to reconfigure is our Awards Gala. This event is one of the highlights of our programming year. It is a time to dress up, socialize and celebrate all the fantastic marketing work your firms do. The Special Events Committee had some big plans for us, which are on hold until 2021. However, this doesn’t mean that we will not be celebrating our award recipients in 2020! Please continue to submit your website updates, holiday pieces, videos and other marketing collateral. We want to celebrate YOU, even if it’s not in person. Stay-tuned to learn how your dedicated, creative Special Events Committee plans to celebrate you. For more information on award categories and how to submit, visit our page here: https://smpsboston.dev.circlesstudio.com/awards/call-for-entries
To say that everyone has stepped up is an understatement. Your chapter volunteers haven’t rested once. They continue to care about every member, asking how they can best serve each of you during this time. As we continue to rethink the remainder of this year’s program year, let us know what resources or programming you want. Reach out to me directly at [email protected]. SMPS Boston and all our volunteers are here for you.
In the meantime, let’s give our volunteers a virtual high-five and round of applause. They deserve it.
