Years Involved in SMPS: 4 years
What SMPS committees are you involved with, if any?
I just joined the Professional Development committee this year! It’s been great to finally get involved.
What drew you to joining SMPS?
Well, my boss (Dave Easterbrooks) told me to… Just kidding! I was happy to join when he recommended it. Dave has been involved with SMPS for many, many years, so he understands better than anyone the value of both the learning and networking opportunities in SMPS, and has always encouraged me to join and get involved. As is the case with many of us, I had no previous experience in marketing or the AEC industry, and there was (and still is!) so much to learn from both the leaders and my peers in SMPS. I wish I had joined a Committee sooner, because it’s been the best way to actually get to know people and stay involved in/on top of everything that’s going on.
What is your favorite part about your work?
I really love the combination of different skills it takes to produce proposals. The organizational skills to read an RFP and put a proposal together, writing skills to produce them, and creativity to design them – it can really be both technically and creatively interesting work. It’s really rewarding to have a final product to show, too. More generally, especially from working on the civil engineering side, I love to understand more about the infrastructure surrounding me every day. It’s fun to see it in the wild, too, like driving by a bridge or dam or water tower and going, “oh, that’s ___! I know all about that!” It’s really cool to connect with so many of the places I’ve grown up in in a new way.
What is a way that you de-stress from work, either in or outside of the workplace?
I try to go on a walk at lunchtime every day, no matter the weather – especially this time of year, when it can be the only daylight I get. It’s so important to get away from my desk and get fresh air. Outside of work I like to relax by crocheting, going to concerts, singing in my two choirs, or playing my Switch!
What are you currently watching, reading, or listening to?
I’m always always listening to my favorite band, Onewe (I’ll talk about them with literally anyone, I am so serious) as well as The Paper Kites, a long-time favorite. I love fantasy novels – this year I’ve started the Jasmine Throne series by Tasha Suri and also took the dive into Robin Hobb’s entire Elderlings series. I’m currently on Ship of Magic (Book 4 of 16!) so I’ve got a way to go, but I’m enjoying it very much.
