Our Member Spotlight Blog serves as a platform to welcome new members to SMPS Boston and highlight our established members within the A/E/C community. This week, we're getting to know Kristie Norris, CPSM, Marketing Manager at HGA and longtime contributor to SMPS!
Name: Kristie Norris, CPSM
Company: HGA
Title: Marketing Manager
Years Involved in SMPS: 7
What SMPS committees are you involved with, if any?
I’m currently on four committees! I’ve been on the Professional Development and Communications committees since joining in 2018, but also joined Special Events and CPSM last year. I was also the Director for Professional Development from 2022-2024.
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
I was encouraged by a former director of mine to join. She turned out to be the President of the Chapter and introduced me to other members and helped me make valuable connections. I had received postcards in the past from SMPS encouraging me to join, but I thought it was like an ice cream social club. Man was I wrong! However, I wouldn’t mind if there was an SMPS ice cream social in the future (hint hint, Membership).
What advice would you give to someone considering joining SMPS?
It’s a valuable resource, so definitely do it! We have great programming to help you advance your professional development and getting involved with a committee provides the opportunity to take on leadership roles or practice skills you don’t utilize in your current position. Plus, the members are people you collaborate with frequently from the professional perspective. I remember going to my first event and realizing I knew more people than I thought because I was emailing them all the time! We all understand the highs and lows that come from a career in AEC Marketing. I’ve received great advice, both professional and personal, from my friends in SMPS Boston and wouldn’t have the career I have today without my involvement and connections.
What do you work toward in your free time?
You can find me on the stage with some local theaters as an actor, taking my big rescue dog on hikes or to the dog park, working with my horse to get him back in shape after a long injury, or doing tarot readings for friends.
What are you currently watching, reading, or listening to?
I have varied interests, so my streaming recommendations are all over the place! I’ve got things like Abbott Elementary or Shrinking, but it’s contrasted with shows like The Last of Us, Severance, or White Lotus. I can’t wait until the Love is Blind: Boston season airs! Reading wise, I’m currently reading A People’s History of the United States and finished up The Lost Apothecary a few weeks ago - I also love Stephen King and started reading Sleeping Beauties a while back, but switched gears. I also listen to paranormal podcasts like And That’s Why We Drink and Two Girls, One Ghost. When I’m jamming out to music it’s either 90s Pop, Classic Rock, or Broadway showtunes.
