Our Member Spotlight Blog serves as a platform to welcome new members to SMPS Boston and highlight our established members within the A/E/C community. This week, we're getting to know Maria Tsuda, Senior Marketing Coordinator at Sasaki!
Name: Maria Tsuda
Company: Sasaki
Title: Senior Marketing Coordinator
Years Involved in SMPS: Since April 2024
What SMPS committees are you involved with, if any?
I haven’t joined a committee yet; however, I’m currently participating in the mentorship program, and we are getting pretty close to “graduating"!
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
I have always been eager to find opportunities to connect with professionals in the AEC industry, where we can network, share invaluable insights, learn from one another, and contribute to each other’s professional growth. Fortunately, my managers Annie Langlois and Jenn Robertson, who are actively involved in the SMPS, encouraged me to join, and I am very grateful they did.
What led you to working in the A/E/C industry?
I have always been interested in and enjoyed designing something three-dimensional ever since I was a kid. Design has been a way to express my feelings and convey messages, especially after moving abroad and facing a language barrier. This motivated me to pursue dual degrees in Architecture and Graphic Design at Northeastern University.
After exploring various fields and positions through multiple internships and co-ops—considering a career as an architect/architectural designer, a graphic designer outside of the AEC industry, or a graphic designer within the AEC industry—I stumbled upon this marketing position at Sasaki, where both my architectural knowledge and graphic skills could truly shine. I have enjoyed this role, acquiring in-depth knowledge about the industry as well as marketing, and I feel very grateful to work alongside talented individuals every day.
What do you work toward in your free time?
Since last year, I have participated in marathons across different cities to challenge myself with various courses, elevations, weather conditions, and temperatures. My background in track and field has made me appreciate the feeling of being able to go anywhere on my own two feet and having goals to run toward. Additionally, this gives me an opportunity to explore cities I have never visited before. It’s like a destination wedding, as I can combine my passion for running with the joy of traveling and discovering new places from a unique perspective.
Last year, I ran marathons in San Francisco and Honolulu. This year, I’m registered for one in New Hampshire and considering doing one or two more. I also hope to run the Boston Marathon one day! I truly love running and being outdoors, so you might spot me when I’m running along the esplanade.
What are you currently watching, reading, or listening to?
I watch Korean dramas frequently in my free time; most recently, I watched "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call." I’m currently exploring different genres of music as I need a good playlist for running marathons. Please share any upbeat music recommendations you may have!
