Our Member Spotlight Blog serves as a platform to welcome new members to SMPS Boston and highlight our established members within the A/E/C community. This week, we're getting to know Sidney Marcey, Marketing Coordinator at Sasaki, and the new SMPS Blog Manager!

What SMPS committees are you involved with, if any?
Communications, the best committee!!
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
My manager Jenn Robertson is the incumbent Communications Director at SMPS, and she encouraged me to get involved at SMPS (or else…). As someone who studied marketing at school, a lot of A/E/C is so unique compared to what one considers to be traditional marketing, so getting the opportunity to practice some of the skills I studied in school is valuable to me. I also enjoy meeting people from other firms through SMPS and realizing that we all go through the same struggles and are in it together!
What led you to working in the A/E/C industry?
My father is an architect and having grown up in such close proximity to the A/E/C industry, I was drawn to the familiarity and the unique challenges that this industry presents. Sasaki always struck me as a firm with really confident and unique branding, so I was excited that the opportunity to apply for a position there came up!
What do you work toward in your free time?
I like to spend my free time chasing creative pursuits. In the pipeline right now I have been crafting a lot of earrings (my go-to place for materials is called Beadnik in Brattleboro, Vermont), learning to knit, learning how to do film photography, and playing my dusty guitar once every couple of weeks. Outside that, I can often be found going to the movies, concerts, reading outdoors, cooking something ambitious (I did a delicious vegan shepherd’s pie the other day), spending time with my roommate or training for a half marathon (that is a new development).
What are you currently watching, reading, or listening to?
For TV, my roommate and I are finishing Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Dekalog, an old Polish TV series which made the Vatican Film List. Movies-wise, I have a John Cassavetes boxset sitting in my credenza that I am slowly working through. My goal this year was to read Ulysses, but it doesn’t look like that will be happening. Maybe next year, everyone says. I’m currently listening to a lot of Basic Channel, The Radio Dept. and Disco Inferno, and recently a vinyl copy of Apartment Life by Ivy has made it into my apartment and has barely left my turntable since.
