Our Member Spotlight Blog serves as a platform to welcome new members to SMPS Boston and highlight our established members within the A/E/C community. This week, we're getting to know Chris Stockwell, Director of Market Planning & Communications at Epsilon Associates and Director of Business Development & Marketing at Meridian Associates!
Name: Chris Stockwell
Company: Epsilon Associates, Inc. | Meridian Associates, Inc.
Title: Director Market Planning & Communications | Director, Business Development & Marketing
Years Involved in SMPS: On and off since 2006. I recently re-joined.
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
When I first joined GEI Consultants as CMO in 2006, SMPS Boston stalwart and GEI Marketing Manager Kelly Cohane told me to. So, I did. A world of opportunity unfolded before me - learning the ins-and-outs of A/E/C industry marketing; opportunities for business development and partnering; its superb vendor/supplier pool, and talent acquisition pool, and a great way to make new friends. Each panned out for me. I developed a close professional relationship with GEI’s brand consultant and former SMPS Marketer of the Year, Mark Guarino. We created numerous innovative, award-winning efforts, and still work together every day. I expanded GEI’s existing relationship with Susan Shelby, FSMPS, CPSM, ABCP and her Rhino PR team, together winning the SMPS National Media Relations Award. I met former SMPSer Ed O’Rourke, who would become BD Director for GEI Boston for several years. Further, our team of a dozen marketers at GEI combined our national meetings for several years with the SMPS national conference (Amplify A|E|C), learning much and having great times together. Most were very involved with their local Chapters. I participated in different ways with SMPS Connecticut and then fledgling SMPS Northern New England. When Ben Sawa, CPSM, FSMPS moved over from the technical side at GEI to our Marketing team, we suggested that he join, and he did. We all know how that ended up! Since then, I’ve done a boatload of things- never a dull moment. I now lead Market Planning & Communications at Epsilon Associates, the amazing environmental permitting firm that is my SMPS sponsor. I recently hired Sydney Mason as Epsilon Marketing Coordinator, and asked if she would like to join. She did. And the beat goes on…
What advice would you give to someone considering joining SMPS?
Focus both on learning and developing authentic relationships. Participate when you can and give back when you can.
What do you work toward in your free time?
I co-chair my church’s 100th anniversary celebration year. I also deeply love my wife and adult children, and with what little time I do have, I focus on them.
What are you currently watching, reading, or listening to?
I watch CNN and FOX and other outlets and listen to WBUR and WRKO during daily commutes to better understand what the audiences on both sides of our fractured politics and society are hearing. That’s important to me. I’ve been reading Mark Booth’s The Secret History of the World, a quite heavy read, but have put that down recently to chill-out on John Grisham’s The Whistler.
