Dear SMPS Boston and our collaborating AEC community,

Wow, what a year it’s been! It’s hard to believe that my Presidential year is wrapping up, yet it feels like just yesterday that our current Board was in our summer strategic planning sessions and getting ready for the new chapter year. With so many positive experiences and learning moments in these past 12 months, I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to serve you all in this incredible role of leadership.

If you joined us at the SMPS Awards Gala this year, you’ll recall the three big things I shared that I’ve learned this year – and if you missed the event (I forgive you), here they are for your safe keeping!

1.      The power of collaboration: embracing the importance of teamwork and understanding that we truly are better together is crucial to today’s work environment.

2.      Learning is forever: whatever you do, wherever you are, continued learning is never out of style or out of the question. Great teammates and leaders are the ones that stay ahead of the curve and keep learning to be successful. Thanks to SMPS, as AEC marketers, we can do that. Never forget that every single one of us has so much more to learn.

3.    Infuse the fun: what are we even doing if we’re not having fun? Yes, the days can be challenging and long, but inspire the non-work-talk, team building activities, remember that it doesn’t always have to be about the job or task at hand – take time to get to know each other and have some fun. Building relationships and camaraderie in what we do is so important for our careers and for all of us as human beings. Life is short. Infuse the fun!

As I reflect on the past year of my life as SMPS Boston President, a marketing leader, a colleague, a wife, a mom, a friend – one of the things that sticks out to me most today can’t be found in my top 3 above:  embracing setbacks. Setbacks – we all have them. I experienced so many of them in both my personal and professional life this year. Setbacks provide us an opportunity to learn, and it all boils down to how we handle them – positive or negative reaction? What’s the lesson learned? How can you fix it to work toward better success in the future? There are always ways to move forward from setbacks, you just have to find them or create them.

I’m so grateful for our 2022-2023 Board of Directors who supported me in ways I could not have imagined or asked for. And I’m infinitely grateful for HLB Lighting Design and all of the opportunity, mentorship, guidance and endless support given to me over the years.

Cheers to SMPS, one of the greatest influences on my career, and to all of you fabulous marketers making strides in our industry! If you ever need a marketing shoulder to lean on, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, I’d love to hear from you: [email protected].

With optimism and joy,
Abby Iorio
