Name: Susan Gray
Company: Shawmut Design and Construction
Title: Senior Director, Marketing and Client Acquisition
Years Involved in SMPS: 25
What SMPS committees are you involved with, if any?
In the past, I have served as an SMPS Marketing Fundamentals Instructor, panelist and event MC. Also, I was honored to be a recipient of the Boston Chapter "Marketing Executive of the Year" award and then continue for several seasons as a member of the SMPS Boston Awards Committee.
Why did you decide to join SMPS?
I was fortunate to have the support of my organization to join SMPS as a Marketing Manager. At the time, I was several years into my career at a Boston-based construction management firm, and before that, I worked for the real estate development group of a well-known Cambridge architectural firm. In these roles, I became very interested in advancing my professional skills in marketing strategy, communications, client acquisition and business development. After attending my first few SMPS events, I realized the benefits of the outstanding industry networking and meaningful educational opportunities that SMPS delivered. For the past decade at Shawmut, each SMPS event, publication and resource offered is relevant to our team's work in many areas, from how we go to market and compete for projects, to strategies for delivering long-term value to our clients. Additionally, we have Shawmut membership coast-to-coast and several team members who have held SMPS leadership roles and continue to be very involved in keeping SMPS strong.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining SMPS?
Join! If you are passionate about driving the growth of your organization and looking to advance your knowledge and career in professional services, then join SMPS. At various points in my career, I have had differing levels of involvement due to family, travel and other obligations. Across the decades, SMPS has been my most reliable source of professional education and an A/E/C peer group upon which I can depend. To be an SMPS member is to be part of a community of professionals who support your success. SMPS membership has been of enduring value to my career, and I hope to return some of what I have received in the years ahead.
What do you work toward in your free time?
Spending time with my three children, including current work on college applications, cheering on Smith College Ice Hockey, and following my SMPS student member son's career. Setting up the backyard rink. Learning a little conversational Italian.
