International Women's Day provides an important opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and is a time to shed a light on progress regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion. To honor this meaningful cause, in line with our mission to support local women in need, SMPS Outreach Boston organized a series of volunteering efforts throughout the month of March that focused on helping Rosie’s Place members.
The Rosie’s Place Care Package Drive, organized in partnership with the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) and Women in Pharma (WIP), helped distribute more than 100 care packages to Rosie’s guests. The packages contained items to cover basic hygienic needs such as toothpaste, soap, and other toiletry items that will contribute to stretch Rosie’s limited budget, particularly inadequate since the onset of the coronavirus.
The second initiative included underwriting food costs, preparing, and serving a meal to guests at their center’s Dining Room. On March 30, four volunteers representing different SMPS Boston Committees volunteered half a day to support this effort. They served 189 meals and prepared around 30 meals to go. “The labor was physically hard and very different from our desk jobs, but it was important work and time well spent.” – says Jennifer Tulipani, CMTA.
The core mission of Rosie’s Place is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives. The staff and volunteers are there to serve the women and they do not offer charity. This message resonated with our strong belief that everyone should be treated with respect, regardless of their economic status.
We are both proud members of SMPS Boston for supporting causes that provide resources and opportunity to some of the most at-risk and fragile Boston residents.
