Favorite Five Post-Holiday Winter Activities

Many people can’t wait for the holidays to come around each year. They do all the fun holiday essential activities, like Christmas shopping, lighting the menorah, attending church services, decorating sugar cookies, partaking in gift swaps, and arguably most importantly, spending that quality time with friends and family.
But the holidays always seem so far away; they arrive, there’s a flurry of chaos, and then they’re gone again, and suddenly there’s another 365 days until they come again. So while you may be feeling that sense of emptiness now that Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s are all over, I’ve come up with a list of my favorite five winter activities to enjoy and look forward to even after the holidays have ended.
- Try a new winter sport - there are many different winter recreational sports you can enjoy while the air is chilly and frost coats your car’s windshield. Get out in the fresh, crisp air and try ice skating, skiing, or sledding. Many places locally offer public skating, and there are great hills in Massachusetts and New Hampshire you can visit to hit the slopes, or glide down in a sled with friends and family (my boyfriend and I are going to go skiing for the very first time soon!)
- Go shopping - chances are, after the holidays you’ve received some money and gift cards to your favorite stores and/or restaurants. Spend that money and use your gift cards before you forget you have them, or worse, lose them (I know I sometimes misplace gift cards or forget I have them).
- Enjoy a wintery drink - stop by your local café and get a nice and hot (or iced - we do live in New England!), coffee or tea to enjoy when you need a cold day pick-me-up. I love getting a flat white from Starbucks!
- Attend a concert or sporting event - there are always shows and live music in local bars or at concert venues going on in places in and around Boston where you can see a gig by local or more well-known artists. The Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics are also playing during this time of year, so try to catch a game (if you have a bit of extra money to spare, because those tickets are expensive! But it’s always a great time).
- Find cozy indoor activities to enjoy - if you’d like to escape the cold weather and stay snug and warm inside, find some activities you can do without getting cold; try making a new soup recipe, cuddle up with a book and read for a few hours, and light a comforting candle. Cutting some time out of your day to focus on something you enjoy doing that brings you peace is very important (and being comfortable and warm doing said activities, tucked away from snow and 20 degree temperatures is also a plus!)
Hopefully these ideas help brighten up your post-holiday blues, and you enjoy the present time of year and all that January, February, and March will bring! Spring starts in March after all, and it’s not too far away! Happy 2024!
