Summer is here, despite the Boston weather insisting otherwise. Eventually though, this marathon of rainy days will end, and people will begin to head to the coast. While enjoying the beach, it’s important to remember that our actions can impact the environment. Here are five easy ways to have a sustainable and respectful beach trip:

  1. Be responsible for your trash. Yes, this means taking it with you when you leave, but also making sure that the wind doesn’t carry anything away during your time at the beach. It’s also important to be aware of food debris, which could attract invasive  wildlife when left behind.
  2. Don’t take the beach home with you. Even though those shells, rocks, and sand dollars may look pretty, taking them can disrupt natural ecosystems and harm wildlife. Snap a photo and leave it where you found it.
  3. Wear eco-friendly sunscreen. Many traditional sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that can end up in the ocean and harm local wildlife. Wearing eco-friendly sunscreen will help to protect the environment while keeping  you safe from the sun!
  4. Admire wildlife from a distance. While most adults (hopefully) know better than to mess with the creatures that call the beach home, make sure any children in your group are being respectful as well. Most of these animals are delicate and can be easily harmed, even by people with the best intentions.
  5. Stick to the paths. Beach dunes protect the coast from major storms, and the grasses serve to prevent beach erosion. Don’t trudge through the dunes - follow the trails that are already laid out.
