As the Professional Development Committee ramps up for our annual Bootcamp, we recently released a survey to some SMPS marketers to help shape one of our courses (AEC Marketing 101). In the survey, we asked if they could share one piece of advice for new AEC marketing professionals, what it would be? Here are some of the responses!
- Try to understand exactly what your technical staff does daily; the easiest way to get them to talk is to ask them about a project they're working on! It will help you know what needs to be included in SOQs and proposals.
- Consult the glossary originally prepared by the SMPS Dallas Chapter and later picked up by the National organization… it will clue you in on a huge number of acronyms you will need to know every day.
- If you don't have lists of what projects you did with what clients and what contractors, what architects/engineers, make them! Calendars and lists are life savers. It's key to keep lists of dates and priorities to help your boss visualize what you're doing and help you stay on track and on time!
- Don't be afraid to ask questions. Find a safe space (SMPS!) and a person (or people) in which you can confide and ask questions. It doesn't have to be a formal mentor/mentee relationship - but find your network and USE them!
- Do not settle for a firm whose values do not align with yours…there are too many incredible companies in this industry to settle. Also, join a committee in your local SMPS chapter. Not only is it a great way to learn and volunteer, but it's an awesome way to meet new colleagues and make the most out of your membership.
